After a season which saw Green Bay reaching the Conference title game for the 3rd straight year, the team fell short of their goal of repeating as champions.
One of the controversial decisions of the past year sets up another controversy next season. After winning the League title the team parted ways with Quarterback Russel Schmid at the end of the preseason to make room for two rookie QB's.
Green Bay spent a 1st rounder on Craig Lundy, and then double dipped at the position in the 3rd round to grab Todd Cumming, someone they had considered in the 1st round as well. The two rookies both showed promise in training camp and the preseason, enough that the team feel it was going to hand the reigns over to Lundy with Cumming as the backup, making Schmid expendable.
Lundy's performance in the regular season was shaky, and Cumming not much better in his 2 relief appearances when Lundy was hurt, but both were able to do enough to help Green Bay win 12 games and clinch a first round bye. Some might question whether or not keeping Schmid on as the starter would have propelled the team further than the conference Championship when the offense managed to net only 7 points against New Orleans.
If Lundy continues to struggle in the numbers he's putting up, Cumming may be ready to take over as the starter, although the team is currently still fully supporting Lundy as their QB of the future. In fact it seems somewhat likely for the team to field offers from interested teams who are looking for a young franchise QB and are interested in dealing for Cumming.
Green Bay will still be reliant on their excellent defense to keep them competitive but if things start clicking for Lundy this could be a tough team to beat next season.
